Coefficient of performance
Just like the efficiency of cars can be measured in miles per gallon (MPG), heating is measured by the Coefficient of Performance, or CoP. The higher the CoP, the more efficient the heating system. The CoP rating refers to how many units of heat a heating system produces for every unit of energy it consumes. So if a heating system uses 2 units of energy and produces 4 units of heat, it has a CoP of 2. If it uses 1 unit of energy to produce 3 units of heat, it has a CoP of 3 and so on.
A standard gas boiler typically has an efficiency of around 0.93. A SOLECO ground source heatpump usually has a CoP of greater than 4 at MCS tested conditions (ref BS EN 14511:2001).
